Does Junk Food and Chocolate Cause Pimples?
Belief: Pimples are caused if you eat too much junk food and sweets, especially chocolate
Truth: Your diet will not directly cause bad skin, pimples and acne breakouts. However, a junk food or fast food diet or one that is full of too many refined sugars (like in sweets and chocolates) may rob your body of the vital ingredients it needs to be healthy. As our skin is the largest organ of the body, it is only common sense that if you are not giving it all the nutrients it needs to be healthy, problems are going to start sooner rather than later! So, whilst bad diet may not be one of the direct causes of pimples, robbing your skin of vital nutrients is definitely bad for your overall health too.
quote from www.medicinenet.com on the causes of pimples and acne:-
“Food: Parents often tell teens to avoid pizza, chocolate, greasy and fried foods, and junk food. While these foods may not be good for overall health, they don’t cause acne or make it worse.”
Are Pimples Caused By Poor Hygiene?
Belief: People who get pimples and blackheads have poor personal hygiene and do not pay proper attention to washing and keeping clean.
Truth: What causes pimples is not poor hygiene although a good skin care routine will help to keep your skin healthy and blemish-free. In fact, in some cases, over emphasis on personal hygiene, washing too many times each day or over use of toners and astringents may be counter-productive as they drying out your skin too much may cause your oil glands to go into a sort of ‘overdrive’ to counteract the problem. This in turn will lead to a sort of vicious circle where more skin breakouts occur.
Is Popping Pimples A Good Treatment?
Belief: Popping pimples is the best way to get rid of them.
Truth: Many dermatologists do not suggest popping pimples as a good way of getting rid of them and in fact trying to pop them may be what causes pimples to spread and will very likely make the problem worse with inflammation and irritation. It could also cause a mark or scar that can persist far longer than the spot would have taken to resolve itself or to heal with the application of topical treatments.
Pimples Hormones?
Belief: Pimples, blackheads and acne are only a problem in teenagers and young adults because of imbalances in hormones.
Truth: Pimples and acne blackheads can occur at any time in our lives, often when we least expect it. What causes pimples is a variety of factors including fluctuations in hormones, stress and environmental factors.
Quote from Wiki Answers about stress and androgen levels affecting acne and pimples:-
“Androgen-the hormone that stimulates the production of sebum-is also produced by your adrenal glands. When you are stressed, your adrenal glands produce excessive amounts of androgen, causing more than normal production of sebum.
So one way of preventing acne is to keep yourself stress-free. A stress-free life will help curb the androgen levels in your body, and thus, minimize the chances of acne breakouts”
